책거리란 조선후기에 유행한 책그림을 가리킨다. 15세기 이탈리아에서 시작되어 16세기 유럽과 17세기 중국을 거처 18세기 조선에 와서 풍부하게 꽃을 피운, 글로벌하면서 한국적인 책그림이다. 지금까지 한국회화사에서 그 가치에 대해 미처 관심을 기울이지 못했지만, 최근에는 국내외 학자들 사이에서 뜨거운 연구대상이 되고 있는 모티브다.

책거리 영문 도록은 ‘책거리’란 이름을 세계적인 브랜드로 알리기 위해 준비한 것이다. 도록 이름은 우리 발음 그대로 ‘CHAEKGEORI’로 표기했고, 부제를 ‘The Power and Pleasure of Possessions in Korean Painted Screens(한국 병풍에 나타난 소장품의 힘과 즐거움)’라고 붙였다. 제목처럼 책거리를 물질문화의 관점에서 연구한 책이다. 이 도록은 미국 뉴욕주립대학교 출판부(SUNY Press)와 한국 다할미디어에서 공동 출판했다. 도록의 기획은 경주대학교 정병모 교수와 미국의 다트머스대학 김성림 교수가 맡아서 진행했고, 뉴욕주립대학교 김홍경 교수가 기획한 ‘한국학 시리즈’로 발간했다.

? What is a bokgeori painting?

Bokgeori refers to book paintings that were popular in the late Joseon Dynasty. It is a global and Korean book painting that originated in Italy in the 15th century, travelled to Europe in the 16th century and China in the 17th century, and blossomed in Korea in the 18th century. Until now, little attention has been paid to its value in the history of Korean painting, but in recent years, it has become a hot topic of research among scholars at home and abroad.

The Book Street English Dictionary was prepared to promote the name 'Book Street' as a global brand. The name of the book is written as 'CHAEKGEORI' as it is pronounced in Korean, and the subtitle is 'The Power and Pleasure of Possessions in Korean Painted Screens'. As the title suggests, it is a study of bookstores from the perspective of material culture. It was co-published by SUNY Press, State University of New York, USA, and Dahal Media, Korea. The book was edited by Professor Byungmo Jung of Gyeongju National University and Professor Sunglim Kim of Dartmouth College, USA, and published as part of the 'Korean Studies Series' organised by Professor Hongkyung Kim of the State University of New York.

About the US Book Street Tour

This book contains the contents of the Bookstreet exhibition currently travelling to the United States. The US tour was conceived as an overseas exhibition of the exhibition, which received a great response in 2016 at the Calligraphy Museum at the Seoul Arts Centre, and is sponsored by the Korea Foundation for International Exchange and the Museum of Modern Art. The first exhibition in the United States was held at the Charles Wang Center of the State University of New York from September to December 2016, followed by exhibitions at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas from April to June and the Cleveland Museum of Art from August to November.

The world's first international seminar on book streets
