검안은 살인, 자살 등과 같은 사건이 발생한 경우 수령이 시신을 검시하고, 사건을 수사하여 관련 내용을 관찰사에게 보고하는 문서로, 20세기 전후인 대한제국기에 집중되어 있다. 검안은 인명 사건을 둘러싼 향촌 사회의 여러 갈등, 백성들의 생활상과 법 관념, 사법제도 운영 모습 등을 확인할 수 있는 자료이다. 이 책은 먼저 산송(山訟), 도박, 여성 문제, 동학(東學) 관련 사건 등을 대표하는 유형의 검안 4종을 선별하여 번역하였다. 선별된 검안은 「충청도 청안군 서면 만수동 치사남인 이면하 검안」, 「충청도 공주군 의랑면 대평리 치사남인 이판용 문안」, 「강원도 회양군 장양면 상신원리 일경동 치사여인 문조이 초검안」, 「전라도 광양군 봉강면 강변촌 치사남인 이학조 시체 복검안」이다. 이 4건의 검안을 중심으로 민중의 이야기, 이중으로 억압받던 하층 여성의 목소리, 정의로운 폭력과 그 한계 등을 이야기하면서 한말 근대화 과정에서 전통적 가치의 혼란과 충돌, 갈등 양상 등을 담아냈다.

In the event of an incident such as murder or suicide, the head of the state examines the body, investigates the incident, and reports the relevant information to the observer, and is concentrated during the Korean Empire around the 20th century. The optometry is a data that confirms various conflicts in the Hyangchon society over human cases, the lives and legal concepts of the people, and the operation of the judicial system. This book was first translated by selecting four types of optometry representing mountain 訟, gambling, women's issues, and Donghak-related cases. The selected optometry is "Eyebyeonha Geoman, a lethal man in Mansu-dong, Cheongan-gun, Chungcheong-do," "Ebyeonpanyongmun, a lethal man in Daepyeong-ri, Uirang-myeon, Gongju-gun, Chungcheong-do," "Ebyeon Munjo, a lethal woman in Sangsin-ri, Jangyang-myeon, Gangwon-do," and "Ebokmun, a corpse of Lee Hak-jo, a lethal man in a riverside village in Bonggang-myeon, Gwangyang-gun, Jeolla-do." Focusing on these four optometry cases, the stories of the people, the voices of low-ranking women who were doubly suppressed, righteous violence, and its limitations were captured in the process of modernization, including confusion, conflict, and conflict of traditional values.
