She had seen it one afternoon in late summer as she walked past a remote apartment building. On the second floor, a woman was hanging laundry on a rack outside the balcony. A strand of laundry escaped her. One handkerchief floated down, slowest of all, and finally landed on the floor. Like a bird with half folded wings. Like a soul cautiously looking for a place to settle down.

While the narrator is on a writing fellowship in Warsaw, a snowy city full of tangible scars from past violence, she is haunted by the story of her older sister, who died just two hours after her birth. A fragmented exploration of white things is the result – the swaddling clothes, which were also her burial shroud, the milk from her mother's breasts that she no longer drank, the blank page on which the narrator tries in vain to reconstruct the story – everything unfolds in a powerful , poetic distillate. White is a book like no other. They are thoughts about a color, about the strength and fragility of the human spirit, and attempts to find new life in the ashes of destruction.
