외로움, 사랑, 슬픔과 기쁨과 같은 테마로 꾸준히 작품을 발표해온 우리 시대의 대표적인 서정시인 정호승의 동화 『연인』이 영어로 번역 출간됐다. 『연인』은 지난 1998년 출간된 이후 수십 쇄를 거듭하며 사랑의 진정한 의미를 깨닫게 해주는 ‘어른을 위한 동화’로 오늘날까지도 사랑을 받고 있다.

정호승 시인은 “나는 이 동화를 통하여 인간은 홀로 존재할 수 없다는 것을 이야기하고 싶었다”며 “내 존재의 가치는 당신이 있음으로 해서 형성된다는 것을 우리 모두에게 이야기하고 싶었다”고 작품 집필 동기를 설명했다.

저자는 또한 “사랑이야말로 우리 삶에 가장 중요한 가치라는 것을, 진정한 사랑에는 아무런 조건이 없고 무한하며 희생과 책임과 용서가 따른다는 것을 이야기하고 싶었다”고 덧붙였다.

안선재 교수의 섬세한 번역과 박항률 화백의 감성적인 그림

영어 제목 ‘Loving’으로 출간되는 『연인』은 안선재 서강대 명예교수가 번역했다. 안선재 교수는 지난 2016년 서울셀렉션에서 출간한 정호승 시인의 영문 시집 『A Letter Not Sent』와 『Though Flowers Fall I Have Never Forgotten You』를 영미권에 소개한 번역가로, 수십 년간 한국 문학을 세계에 알리기 위해 애쓴 그의 노력이 본 작품에도 드러난다. 안선재 교수의 번역과 함께 박항률 화백의 다채롭고 감성적인 그림이 더해져 이야기를 읽고 보는 재미를 선사한다.

사랑과 희생, 삶과 죽음에 대한 성찰

『연인』의 주인공은 전라남도 화순 운주사 대웅전 처마 끝에 매달린 물고기 모양의 풍경이다. 일상에 지친 풍경 푸른툭눈은 점점 삶의 공허함을 느끼고 자신의 짝인 검은툭눈이 자신을 사랑하는지 의심하게 된다. 운주사와 검은툭눈을 벗어나기를 고대하던 푸른툭눈은 어느 날 우연한 계기로 풍경의 쇠줄을 끊어버리고 하늘을 자유롭게 날아다니는 ‘비어’가 되어 자유와 사랑을 찾아 떠난다.

푸른툭눈은 그러나 새로운 사랑을 찾는 과정에서 온갖 위기에 처하게 되고 생사의 고비를 여러 차례 경험한 끝에 고통과 상처 없는 사랑, 기다림 없는 사랑은 없다는 것을 깨닫는다.

우여곡절을 겪는 푸른툭눈의 여정이 시인의 따스하고 깊이 있는 시선으로 그려진다. 푸른툭눈이 곤경에 처할 때마다 운주사 와불과의 대화를 통해 자신의 존재를 성찰하면서 사랑과 세상을 배워나가는 대목이 울림을 준다. 마치 화두를 든 선승이 깨달음을 찾아가는 여정을 연상케 한다. 특히 푸른툭눈과 와불의 사실적인 대화 부분은 이야기의 틀에 생동감과 설득력을 부여하는 동시에 시인의 메시지를 더욱 실감나게 전달해준다.

A fairy tale for adults by Hoseung Jung

The fairy tale "Lovers" by Jung Hoseung, a representative lyrical poet of our time who has consistently published works on themes such as loneliness, love, sorrow, and joy, has been translated into English. Since its publication in 1998, "The Lovers" has gone through dozens of editions and is still loved today as a "fairy tale for adults" that helps people realise the true meaning of love.

"Through this fairy tale, I wanted to tell people that humans cannot exist alone," said the poet, "and I wanted to tell all of us that the value of my existence is shaped by the presence of you," he said.

"I also wanted to tell us that love is the most important value in our lives, that true love has no conditions, is infinite, and involves sacrifice, responsibility, and forgiveness," he added.

A delicate translation by Professor Ahn Sun-jae and emotional illustrations by Park Hang-ryul

Lovers, which is published in English as Loving, was translated by Professor Emeritus Ahn Seon-jae of Sogang University. Ahn is the translator of Jung Ho-seung's English-language poetry collections A Letter Not Sent and Though Flowers Fall I Have Never Forgotten You, both published by Seoul Selection in 2016, and his decades-long efforts to bring Korean literature to the world are reflected in this work. Ahn's translation is complemented by Park's colourful and emotional paintings, which make the story a pleasure to read and look at.

Reflections on love, sacrifice, life and death

"The main character of Lovers is a fish-shaped landscape hanging from the eaves of Daeungjeon Hall of Unjusa Temple in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do. Tired of everyday life, Blue Tuknoon gradually feels the emptiness of life and doubts whether his mate, Black Tuknoon, loves him. Looking forward to breaking free from Unjusa and Black Tukey, Blue Tukey accidentally breaks the ropes of the landscape one day and becomes a free-flying "Beer" in search of freedom and love.

However, in his search for new love, Blue Tuknun faces many crises and experiences many life and death situations, and realises that there is no love without pain, no love without hurt, and no love without waiting.

Blue Tuk-Noon's journey through twists and turns is depicted with the warmth and depth of a poet's gaze. Whenever Blue Tongue is in trouble, he learns about love and the world by reflecting on his own existence through a dialogue with Unjusa Wabool. It is reminiscent of the Zen monk's journey to enlightenment. In particular, the realistic dialogue between Blue Tongue and Wabool brings the story to life and convincingly conveys the poet's message.
