K-픽션 서른 번째 작품. 서수진 작가의 단편소설 〈골드러시〉는 호주에서 살고 있는 커플 서인과 진우의 이야기를 담고 있다. 서수진 작가는 2020년 『코리안 티처』로 한겨레문학상을 받으며 작품 활동을 시작했으며 현재 호주 시드니에서 살고 있다. 영문 번역은 전미세리 번역가가 맡았으며 선우은실 문학평론가의 짧은 해설이 실려 있다.

〈골드러시〉 속 연인인 서인과 진우는 호주 워킹홀리데이에서 만나 잠시 한국에 귀국해 혼인신고를 하고 호주로 돌아가 정착하기를 꿈꾼다. 두 사람은 함께하는 미래를 바랐지만 구체적으로 그려나가는 미래의 모습이 조금씩 달랐다. 그 때문에 현재에서도 조금씩 엇나가기 시작하다가 큰 갈등을 겪는다. 그럼에도 완전히 헤어지지 않고 서로의 곁에서 시간을 보내다 떠난 짧은 여행의 장면을 그리고 있다. 이 여행에서 만나게 되는 뜻밖의 장면들은 크게 터져 나오는 갈등보다도 더 깊고 진한 인상을 새겨놓는다. 이후 두 사람은 어떤 미래로 나아가게 될까.

선우은실 문학평론가는 해설에서 “‘더 이상 미래 없음’의 시점에서도 그 이후에 대한 어렴풋한 기대가 지금 어떤 관계를 완전히 끝장내지 못함을, 미래로 향하는 삶의 불확실성이란 그런 식으로 삶을 지속시킨다는 것”을 소설을 통해 조금씩 알아간다고 말한다.

나는 이 소설을 읽는 당신이 슬퍼하기를 바란다. 뒤뜰을 가꾸는 서인의 뒷모습을, 캥거루를 타이어 레버로 내리치는 진우의 뒷모습을 오랫동안 바라봐주기를 바란다. 지나가버린 사랑을 온 힘을다해 움켜쥐고 있는 이들을 안쓰럽게 여겨주기를 바란다. 우리가 사랑을 포기하지 않음으로써 언젠가는 사랑에 다가갈 수도 있지 않겠냐고 말해주기를 바란다.

I hope you feel grieved while reading the story. Even after you finish reading, I hope, you will never stop gazing after So-in tending the backyard or Jin-wu striking the kangaroo down with the tire lever. 하나의 시간이 끝났음을 선고하는 일은 단순히 미래의 실패를 의미하지 않는다. 어떤 것이 흘러간 시간이 되어버렸을 때 그것은 추체험되기 시작한다. 이 서늘한 종언의 서사는 ‘지나가버린 미래’일지라도 그것에 대한 동경이 쉬이 끝나지 않을 것임을 암시한다. 그리고 바로 지금, ‘더 이상미래 없음’의 시점에서도 그 이후에 대한 어렴풋한 기대가 지금 어떤 관계를 완전히 끝장내지 못함을, 미래로 향하는 삶의 불확실성이란 그런 식으로 삶을 지속시킨다는 것을 우리는 조금씩 알아간다.

Pronouncing the end of a time does not simply mean the failure to have the anticipated future arrive. Once something passes into the bygone times, it then begins to be re-experienced in one way or another. The terrible pronouncement of death paradoxically alludes to the fact that the aspiration for the future is hard to die even after it becomes the ‘bygone future.’ And now, at this moment of ‘no more future,’ some expectation for the ‘thereafter,’ faint as it may be, holds one back from ending the present relationship once and for all. Thus, we learn little by little that is the way the uncertainty of the future has us carry on with our lives.

About the book

The Gold Rush, an epic saga of a chilling end, by Sujin Seo

K-Fiction's thirtieth work. Sujin Seo's short story 'Gold Rush' tells the story of Seo-in and Jin-woo, a couple living in Australia. Sujin Seo received the Hankyoreh Literary Prize for Korean Teacher in 2020 and currently lives in Sydney, Australia. The English translation is by Jeon Mi-seri, with a short commentary by literary critic Sunwoo Eun-sil.

Seo-in and Jin-woo, the lovers in Gold Rush, meet on a working holiday in Australia and dream of returning to Korea, getting married, and settling down in Australia. Although they hoped for a future together, the way they envisioned it was slightly different, and because of this, they began to diverge in the present, leading to a major conflict. The film depicts a short trip where they spent time by each other's side without completely separating. The unexpected scenes they encounter on this trip leave a deeper and more lasting impression than the conflict that erupts. What kind of future will they have afterwards?

In her commentary, literary critic Sun Woo-eun-sil says that through the novel, we learn that "even at the point of 'no more future', the vague expectation of a future cannot completely end a relationship now, and that the uncertainty of life heading into the future is what keeps life going."
