『Postmodern Art in Korea: From 1985 on』은 1985년 이후 급작스럽게 부상한 포스트모던 논의를 시작으로 가장 최근까지의 한국 현대미술을 비평적 관점으로 소개하는 영문 도서이다. 회화, 조각, 설치, 사진, 영상 중심의 한국 현대미술사를 주제와 형식에 초점을 맞춰 분석한다. 포스트모더니즘은 진원지인 미국에서 논의가 시들어갈 때 한국에서 새로운 미술운동으로 시작되었다. 1장은 포스트모더니즘이라는 용어 사용과 한국 사회 각 분야에 적용된 포스트모더니즘의 열기에 대해 설명한다. 1960년대 화단을 지배한 추상회화에 대한 아쉬움과 외국사조의 도입 후 독창성과 독자성 문제를 피력한다. 2장에서는 한국에서 포스트모더니즘이 어떤 의미인지 설명하고 3장은 포스트모던 예술을 회화, 조각과 설치, 사진, 비디오와 영상으로 분류하여 작가와 작품을 소개한다.

회화에서는 형상성의 회복을 보여주는 서용선과 최진욱, 권여현과 김남표를 소개한다. 조각과 설치 부문에서는 일상의 오브제를 사용해 개념적인 작품을 보여주는 윤동천, 상징과 은유를 설치 작품으로 보여주는 김명혜, 테크놀로지의 발전과 미래 문명을 상징하는 작품을 만든 이불과 최우람의 예술을 보여준다. 또한 기념비적 작품 활동을 하는 서도호, 향과 재를 사용하여 정체성에 대한 고민하는 오인환을 소개한다. 사진 부문에서는 예술과 현실, 꿈과 실재의 경계를 뒤섞는 정연두, 풍경을 분석적이며 비판적으로 기록하는 김윤호, 사진의 정치 사회적 역할을 드러내는 이강우, 보편화된 관습을 보여주는 윤정미의 사진을 살펴볼 수 있다. 비디오 영상 부문에서는 TV, 비디오, 영상, 기타 전자 매체들이 현대미술의 영역을 점유하게 된데 획기적인 역할을 한 백남준의 비디오 예술론과 백남준 이후의 비디오 영상미술, 그리고 디지털 유연성의 필요성을 말하고 있다.

동시대 미술을 다루고 있기에 포스트모던 예술가에 대한 정립된 소개보다는 필자의 비평적인 관점으로 한국 현대 예술을 알아가는 재미가 있다. 본 도서에서 소개된 예술가들과 작품은 이제 한국을 넘어 세계 전체 맥락 안에서 논의해도 부족하지 않다. 본 도서를 통해 한국의 포스트모더니즘의 흐름과 특징을 해외에 널리 알리고 국제예술교류 증진에 기여하기를 기대한다.

A Discourse on Postmodern Art in Korea

With a Critical Perspective on Postmodernism in Korean Contemporary Art

Postmodern Art in Korea: From 1985 on is written with a critical perspective on how postmodernism in Korean contemporary art has influenced the political and social environment. For reader’s accommodation, the book introduces Korean postmodern art as four fields?painting, sculpture/installation, photography, and video/moving image. In Korea, the discourse on postmodernism started in the late 1980s, resulting in heated cries for democratization within society. The book deals with not only the issues on postmodernism in Korea, the problem of acceptance and interpretation of Western art trend, but also Korean artists and their artworks which classified as postmodern art despite of its difficulty of classification.

The first chapter examines the international flow of postmodernism before looking into the tendencies and nature of Korean postmodern art. The chapter two shows the problems which appeared in Korean postmodernism and issues related to acceptance and interpretation. Chapter three contains Korean postmodern artists and their artworks which are categorized by painting, sculpture/installation, photography, and video/moving image. Suh Yong-sun, Choi Jin-wook, Kwon Yeo-hyun, and Kim Nam-pyo are introduced in painting field. In sculpture and installation field, Yoon Dong-chun, Kim Myung-hye, Cho U-ram, Suh Do Ho, and Oh In-hwan are presented. Jung Yeon-doo, Kim Yun-ho, Lee Kang-woo, Yoon Jeong-mee are introduced in photography field. Additionally, Paik Nam June and his video art theory are dealt with in video/moving image field.

The signs of the postmodernism in 1990s conflicted with the existing system but played a positive role in various genres of art as the principal agent for change. Because the contents of book deal with the "contemporary" art, the formulated and fixed introduction of Korean postmodern art is not existed. For that reason, the author’s critical review on Korean postmodern art is called for. The introduced artists and their artworks of this book are existed beyond Korea now. The book will promote current status and specialty of Korean Postmodern art overseas and to improve interchanges of arts around the world.

Un discours sur l'art postmoderne en Corée

Avec une perspective critique sur le postmodernisme dans l'art contemporain coréen

L'art postmoderne en Corée : à partir de 1985, il est écrit avec une perspective critique sur l'influence du postmodernisme dans l'art contemporain coréen sur l'environnement politique et social. Pour les besoins du lecteur, le livre présente l'art postmoderne coréen comme quatre domaines : peinture, sculpture/installation, photographie et vidéo/image en mouvement. En Corée, le discours sur le postmodernisme a commencé à la fin des années 80, ce qui a donné lieu à des appels houleux à la démocratisation au sein de la société. Le livre traite non seulement des questions du postmodernisme en Corée, du problème de l'acceptation et de l'interprétation de la tendance de l'art occidental, mais aussi des artistes coréens et de leurs œuvres d'art classifiées en tant qu'art postmoderne malgré sa difficulté de classification.

Le premier chapitre examine le flux international du postmodernisme avant d'examiner les tendances et la nature de l'art postmoderne coréen. Le chapitre deux présente les problèmes qui apparaissent dans le postmodernisme coréen et les questions liées à l'acceptation et à l'interprétation. Le chapitre trois contient les artistes coréens postmodernes et leurs œuvres d'art qui sont classées par la peinture, la sculpture/installation, la photographie et la vidéo/l'image en mouvement. Suh Yong-sun, Choi Jin-wook, Kwon Yeo-hyun et Kim Nam-pyo sont présentés dans le domaine de la peinture. Dans le domaine de la sculpture et de l'installation, Yoon Dong-chun, Kim Myung-hye, Cho U-ram, Suh Do Ho et Oh In-hwan sont présentés. Jung Yeon-doo, Kim Yun-ho, Lee Kang-woo, Yoon Jeong-mee sont présentés dans le domaine de la photographie. De plus, Paik Nam June et sa théorie de l'art vidéo sont traités dans le domaine de la vidéo/image en mouvement.

Les signes du postmodernisme des années 90 sont en conflit avec le système existant, mais jouent un rôle positif dans divers genres d'art en tant qu'agent principal du changement. Parce que le contenu du livre traite de l'art « contemporain », l'introduction formulée et fixe de l'art postmoderne coréen n'existe pas. C'est la raison pour laquelle l'auteur doit faire un examen critique de l'art postmoderne coréen. Les artistes présentés et leurs œuvres d'art de ce livre existent maintenant au-delà de la Corée. Ce livre fera la promotion de la situation actuelle et de la spécialité de l'art postmoderne coréen à l'étranger et améliorera les échanges d'art dans le monde entier.
