1997년 인접 아시아 국가에서 시작된 한류는 2020년대에 들어서면서 전 세계적인 현상으로 확대되었다. BTS(K-pop), 기생충(K-cinema), 오징어 게임(K-drama) 등으로 대표되는 한국 문화 콘텐츠가 글로벌 무대에서 주류 문화를 선도하는 위치에 서게 된 것이다. 특히 한국 드라마는 한류의 태동에 결정적 기여를 한 것은 물론, 한국 사회와 문화에 대한 관심을 이끌어 내는 데 첨병 역할을 해 왔다. 최근에는 넷플릭스와 같은 글로벌 OTT 플랫폼 덕분에 한국 드라마가 아시아를 넘어 전 세계적으로 유통되는 것은 물론 인종, 국가, 성별, 연령 구분을 넘어선 광범위한 시청자를 확보하게 되었다.

이 책은 한류에 힘입어 세계적으로 흥행했거나 좀 더 파헤쳐 볼 만한 가치가 있는 K-드라마와 K-시네마 13편을 선정해 각 작품이 내포하고 있는 의미와 맥락은 물론, 흥행의 이유, 작품을 다른 각도로 바라본다면 어떻게 해석할 수 있는지 등을 폭넓게 다루었다. 또한 작품에서 드러나는 한국 사회의 현실과 특수성 그리고 그 특수성이 비단 한국에 국한되지 않고 어떻게 전 세계인들이 공감하는 보편성을 띄게 되었는지 살펴본다.

The Korean Wave, which began in neighbouring Asian countries in 1997, has become a global phenomenon since the 2020s. Korean cultural content, represented by BTS (K-pop), Parasite (K-cinema), and Squid Game (K-drama), has come to dominate mainstream culture on the global stage. K-dramas, in particular, have played a crucial role in the birth of the Korean Wave and have been at the forefront of generating interest in Korean society and culture. More recently, thanks to global OTT platforms like Netflix, Korean dramas have been distributed globally beyond Asia and have gained a wide audience across racial, national, gender, and age divides.

This book selects 13 K-dramas and K-cinemas that have become global hits thanks to the Korean Wave or that are worthy of further exploration, covering the meaning and context of each film, as well as the reasons for their success and how they can be interpreted from different angles. We also look at the realities and specificities of Korean society and how those specificities are not just limited to Korea but have become universal, resonating with people around the world.

La Vague Coréenne, qui a débuté dans les pays asiatiques voisins en 1997, est devenue un phénomène mondial depuis les années 2020. Le contenu culturel coréen, représenté par BTS (K-pop), Parasite (K-cinéma) et Squid Game (K-drama), domine la culture dominante sur la scène mondiale. Les drames K, en particulier, ont joué un rôle crucial dans la naissance de la Vague Coréenne et ont été à l'avant-garde pour susciter l'intérêt pour la société et la culture coréennes.
