이 책은 한국의 전통 선박인 ‘한선(韓船)’의 역사를 풍부한 도판과 함께 기술하고 있다. 우리나라의 지형 조건에 알맞게 개발되어 독특한 형태와 구조를 지닌 한선의 만듦새와 고기잡이 배에서부터 독창적으로 개발된 싸움배인 거북선에 이르기까지 다양한 한선의 쓰임새를 다루고 있다. 한선의 성장 변화의 과정은 곧 우리 민족의 성장 변화의 과정이라고 할 수 있을 만큼 배는 우리의 삶과 매우 밀착되어 있었다. 한선에 대한 고찰을 통해 우리 민족의 지혜로운 생활상을 엿볼 수 있으며, 우리의 삶을 또 다른 측면에서 올바르게 성찰해 볼 수 있다.

Korea has an illustrious history of shipbuilding which continues until today. Ancient Koreans devised ships of unique construction, considering the topographical conditions of the peninsula. This book sheds light on the advanced shipbuilding technology of ancient Koreans through interesting descriptions of a variety of ships ranging from simple fishing boats to the amazing turtle-shaped battleships of Admiral Yi Sun-shin.

La Corée a une illustre histoire de construction navale qui se poursuit jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Les anciens Coréens ont conçu des navires d'une construction unique, compte tenu des conditions topographiques de la péninsule. Ce livre met en lumière la technologie avancée de construction navale des anciens Coréens grâce à des descriptions intéressantes d'une variété de navires allant de simples bateaux de pêche aux incroyables navires de combat en forme de tortue de l'amiral Yi Sun-shin.

저자(글) Choi Wan Gee

서울대학교 사범대학 역사과 졸업, 고려대학교 대학원 사학과 졸업, 고려대학교 대학원에서 문학박사 학위 취득.

국사편찬위원회 교육연구관 역임, 서울 시립대학교 국사학과 교수 역임, 서울 시립대학교 박물관장 역임, 역사교육연구회 회장 역임, 이화여자대학교 총무처장 역임.

현재 이화여자대학교 사범대학 사회생활학과 교수, 한국사학회 평의원, 역사교육연구회 평의원.

Choi Wan Gee was born in May, 1945 in Hanam City, Korea.

He currently teaches Korean history and educational history as a faculty member of the Social Studies Education Department in Ewha Womans University.

Professor Choi has conducted researches in Seoul National University and Korea University and is an active member of academic societies such as Yoksa Kyoyuk Yonku Hoe and Hankuk Sahak Hoe.
