한글을 지킨 사람들 (세종 대왕부터 헐버트까지) People who kept Hangeul (From King Sejong the Great To Hulbert)

세종 대왕은 오랜 연구 끝에 누구나 쉽게 배울 수 있는 글자를 창제했어요. 그리고 ‘훈민정음’이라고 이름 붙였지요. 훈민정음은 28개의 글자만 익히면 소리 나는 대로 글자를 적을 수 있었어요. 하지만 세종 대왕이 만든 훈민정음은 사대부 양반들의 반대에 부딪혔어요. 사대부들은 조선을 세우는 데 아주 큰 공을 세운 데다 조선의 지배계층을 이룬 집단이었기 때문에 그들의 뜻을 꺾는 것은 쉽지 않았어요.

그럼에도 불구하고 한글이 스러지지 않고 오늘날 우리가 아주 편하게 쓰는 우리글이 된 것은 한글을 지켜 낸 많은 사람들이 있기 때문이에요. 한글을 직접 만들고 널리 펴기 위해 노력한 세종 대왕부터, 선왕의 뜻을 받들고자 한 세조와 성종, 최초의 한글 소설을 쓴 허균, 한글 문법의 뼈대를 세운 주시경 등이 있지요. 책을 통해 한글이 왜 위대한 글자인지, 한글을 만들고 지켜 온 과정은 어떠했는지, 그리고 우리가 해야 할 일은 무엇인지 알아볼 수 있습니다.

After long research, King Sejong created letters that anyone can easily learn. And he named it ‘Hunminjeongeum’. In Hunminjeongeum, if you learn only 28 letters, you can write the letters as they sound. However, Hunminjeongeum, created by King Sejong the Great, faced opposition from nobles. It was not easy to break their will because the nobles made a great contribution to establishing Joseon and were a group that formed the ruling class of Joseon.

Nevertheless, the reason why Hangeul did not disappear and became the Korean language that we use very comfortably today is because there are many people who have preserved Hangeul. From King Sejong the Great who tried to create and widely spread Hangeul, Sejo and Seongjong who tried to follow the will of the previous king, Heo Gyun who wrote the first Korean novel, and Ju Si-gyeong who established the framework of Hangeul grammar.
