K-픽션 서른두 번째 작품. 2022년 심훈문학대상 수상작인 정한아 작가의 소설 『지난밤 내 꿈에』가 한영대역본으로 출간되었다. 영문 번역은 스텔라 김 번역가가 맡았다.

정한아 작가는 작가노트에서 “질병과 돈, 그리고 은총에 대한 이야기를 하고 싶다”는 마음으로 이 소설을 썼다고 밝히고 있다. 이 소설은 한센병력이 있는 외할머니에서부터 이어지는 3대 모녀의 이야기를 그린 작품이다. 외할머니는 화자의 엄마를 버린 적이 있고 그 때문에 모녀의 관계는 냉랭하기만 하다. 남편의 가정폭력을 견디지 못하고 외할머니를 찾아갔을 때도 환대는커녕 모진 말을 듣고 상처를 받는다. 도무지 화해의 가능성이 보이지 않는 세 사람이지만 외할머니가 받게 된 보상금을 처리하는 과정에서 서로가 지닌 삶의 무게를 조금씩 들여다보게 된다.

이 작품은 2022년 발표되어 여러 문학상 후보로 언급되었으며 심훈문학대상으로 선정되었다.

Jeonghanah's "Last Night in My Dream"

K-fiction's 32nd work. Jeong Han-ah's novel Last Night in My Dream, which won the 2022 Shim Hoon Literature Awards, has been translated into Korean and English. The English translation was translated by Stella Kim.

"I want to tell the story of disease, money and grace," Jeong says in her notebook. The novel tells the story of three generations of mother and daughter, who have Hansen's disease history. The mother-daughter relationship is chilly because the mother-daughter relationship once left the narrator's mother. Even when she visits her grandmother after failing to endure her husband's domestic violence, she is hurt by harsh words, let alone hospitality. They have no possibility of reconciliation, but as they deal with the compensation their grandmother received, they are able to see the weight of each other's lives.

The work was announced in 2022 and was mentioned as a candidate for several literary awards, and was selected as the Shim Hoon Literature Grand Prize.

La 32e oeuvre de K-fiction. Le roman de Jeong Han-ah Last Night in My Dream, qui a remporté les Shim Hoon Literature Awards 2022, a été traduit en coréen et en anglais. La traduction anglaise a été traduite par Stella Kim.

« Je veux raconter l'histoire de la maladie, de l'argent et de la grâce », dit Jeong dans son carnet. Le roman raconte l'histoire de trois générations de mère et de fille qui ont des antécédents de maladie de Hansen. 질병과 돈, 그리고 은총에 대한 이야기를 하고 싶다고 생각하며 이 소설을 썼습니다. 10년 전의 저는 믿지 않았던 것들입니다. 시간이 얼마나 빠르게 흐르는지, 우리가 진실이라고 믿는 것들이 얼마나 우습게 변해버리는지를 보면 놀랍습니다. 10년 후의 저는 또 지금 제가 믿지 않는 무엇인가에 대해 쓰고 있을지 모릅니다. 부디 그러하기를 바랍니다.

I wrote this short fiction, thinking that I wanted to talk about disease, money, and grace. These were things that I didn뭪 believe in a decade ago. It is amazing to see how fast time flies, and how what we believe to be true turns into something laughable. Ten years from now, I might be writing about something that today뭩 me do not believe in. In fact, I hope I do.

창작노트 중에서 From Writer’s Note

소설의 마지막 대목에서 화자와 인철이 자신들의 아이에게 ‘해원’이라는 이름을 붙이는 일 역시 이러한 해원의 시도로서, 이는 그들 나름의 방식으로 외할머니의 삶을 위로하고 기억하기 위한 시도로 읽힌다. 이러한 과정을 통해 화자는 외할머니와 엄마, 그리고 자기 자신에게로 이어지는 역사를 받아들이며 모계의 역사라는 지도 위에 설 수 있게 된다.

Toward the end of the short story, the narrator and Incheol also name their daughter Haewon, which seems to be an attempt to resolve the embitterment that the narrator had felt toward her grandmother and to offer consolation and remember her grandmother뭩 life. Through this process, the narrator comes to accept the history that continues from her grandmother and her mother down to herself, and positions herself on the map of matrilineal history.
