SUMMARY

Both a historical thriller, behind closed doors and a tribute to the poet Yun Dong-ju, who died in Fukuoka at the age of twenty-seven, The Guard, the Poet and the Prisoner is a passionate plea for literature and its power of redemption.

Fukuoka Penitentiary, Japan, 1944. An atrocious murder has taken place: that of the head guard, Sugiyama, a man renowned for his bestial cruelty. Private Watanabe, a young Japanese recruit, is responsible for finding the culprit, but barely has he started the interrogations when an influential detainee, a communist and resistant Korean, accuses himself of the crime. However, Watanabe does not believe in his guilt and decides to continue his investigations despite orders from his superiors. As he pieces together the last months of the head warden, he will discover what is really happening in this dark place from which few escape alive: a prisoner willing to do anything to dig his way to freedom, a director whose greed cannot knows no limits, and the strange relationship that developed between the brute Sugiyama and Yun Dong-ju, a young Korean poet. As war rages outside and bombs rain down on Fukuoka, Watanabe will do everything to protect Yun Dong-ju, whose verses are so pure that they break the hardest of hearts. But he will have to face a plot much larger than the prison walls...
