끊어지고 이어지기를 반복하는 언어들과 이미지, 예상치 못한 의미상의 비약과 어긋난 연결……, 『자수견본집』을 펼쳐본 독자들은 조각나고 부서진 언어들을 우선 만나게 된다. 이 문장들은 시인이면서 또한 번역가이기도 한 그가 하나의 언어를 다른 언어를 번역하듯 이 세계와 사물을 시인의 방식대로 번역한 것이라고도 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그 시도들은 가까스로 이어지면서 온전한 모습으로 쉽게 드러나지는 않지만 실패했다고 볼 수는 없다. 박수연 문학평론가의 평대로 “모종의 관념 자체를 언어 놀이의 순간적인 표현으로 드러내려는 시도”들은 “차이와 유사성을 동시에 지닌 언어들을 공명시켜서 무정형의 감각과 이념을 드러내는” 일에 도달하고 있으며, 시인이 「잔」에서 쓴 것처럼 “결국 미완으로 남지 않고 원해서 미완으로 남은/것들이 얼마든지 있을 것”이기 때문이다.

박수연 평론가는 김정환이 이번 시집에서 유독 강조한 무시간적 생명 의지가 “죽음을 거느리되 죽음을 초월하는 욕망으로 연결된다”고 말한다. “한 5천년 뒤에도 내가/살아있을 것 같다”(「프롤로그: 페넬로페의 실」)는 이 무시간성의 감각은 “‘닫혀 있는 말’에 계속 질문하거나 유토피아를 대체하는 종교를 탐구하여 최근에 도달한 지평”이다.

글 쓰는 일을 “가장 공적인 죽음을 가장 사적으로 살아내는 일”이라고 말하는 시인은 갑작스럽게 닥쳐온 죽음을 가능한 한 오래 살아내는 일을 글쓰기를 통해 수행한다. 3부로 구성된 이번 시집을 통해 시력 40년을 지나는 시인에게 ‘죽음’이라는 주제가 어떻게 변화하고 깊어지고 있는지를 확인할 수 있을 것이다.

The first thing the reader encounters when opening the book is fragmented and shattered language and images, unexpected semantic leaps and disjointed connections....... These sentences can be seen as the poet's way of translating the world and its objects, just as he translates one language into another. The attempts are closely connected and not easily revealed in their entirety, but they cannot be considered a failure. As literary critic Park Soo-yeon says, the attempts to "reveal the idea itself as a momentary expression of language play" reach the goal of "revealing amorphous senses and ideologies by resonating languages with differences and similarities at the same time" because, as the poet writes in "Glass," "in the end, there will be any number of things that do not remain unfinished / but remain unfinished because they are desired."

Critic Park Soo-yeon says that Kim's timeless will to live, which he emphasises in this collection, "leads to a desire that is subject to death but transcends death". This sense of timelessness - "I think I'll still be alive / in five thousand years" ("Prologue: Penelope's Thread") - is "a horizon I've recently reached by continuing to question 'closed words' or exploring religions that replace utopias".

For a poet who describes writing as "the most public of deaths and the most private of lives," it is through writing that he keeps his sudden death alive for as long as possible.
