그녀는 길에 무작정 앉는다. 가느다란 목소리의 주인공도 옆에 앉는다. 보이지는 않지만, 앉는 기척이 느껴진다.

“그 반지, 굉장히 중요한 건가 봐요?”

가느다란 목소리가 조심스럽게 묻는다.

그녀는 왼손 넷째 손가락에 끼워진 둥글고 단단하고 매끄러운 물체를 만져본다.

“예? 하지만…… 피임약은 임신을 피하자는 약이잖아요?”

그녀는 미약하게 반박했다. 그녀의 말에 의사는 그 새파랗고 새까만 눈초리로 찔러 죽일 듯이 쳐다보았다.

“남용하다 부작용 생긴 건 본인 잘못이죠. 약이란 게 그렇게 맘대로 먹어도 되는 게 아니에요.”

“그럼 이젠…… 어떻게 하죠?” (〈몸하다〉)

여우가 고개를 들고 마치 사람처럼 남자에게 말했다.

“나를 풀어주시오.”

남자는 깜짝 놀랐다. 그러나 동시에 남자는 덫에 끼인 여우의 발목에서 번쩍이는 액체가 흘러나오는 것을 보았다. 여우는 피가 아니라 황금과 같은, 황금처럼 보이는 것을 흘리고 있었다. (〈덫〉)

그녀는 조용하고 평화로운 삶을 원했고 이웃과 사이좋게 어울려 살아갈 수 있는 소박하지만 따뜻한 동네 공동체를 찾고 있었다. 그리고 드디어 그런 동네를 찾아냈다고 그녀는 생각했다.

여러 민담과 설화, 동화, 전설의 형식을 차용한 정보라의 이야기는 마치 어린 시절 즐겨 듣던 무서운 이야기처럼 오싹하지만 멈출 수 없는 강렬함으로 독자를 끌어당긴다. “몇몇 이야기는 잠을 설치게 할 정도로 무섭다”(이종산)라는 평을 받기도 한다. 작가는 익숙한 일상 풍경 속에 낯선 세계로 향하는 차원의 문을 세워두고 우리를 초대한다. 그 문 앞에서 ‘웰컴 투 정보라 월드’라는 표지를 든 친절한 얼굴의 화자를 따라서 우리는 기꺼이 어두운 길에 들어서고 함정에 걸려든다. 그곳에 숨겨진 반전들이 튀어나올 때면 우리는 소름이 끼치는 경험을 하기도 하고, 혹은 등장인물의 가지고 있던 상처를 깨달으며 이로 인한 그들의 깊은 슬픔에 공감하게 되기도 한다.

그가 원했던 것은 복수가 아니었다. [……] 합당한 결말이라 해도, 그는 밀려오는 상실감을 어찌할 수 없었다. 알지도 못하는 타인들의 주술과 환상과 잘못된 믿음에 빼앗겨버린 어린 시절, 매일이 생사의 기로였으나 이제는 아무 의미도 없어져버린 그때의 오랜 고통과 절망을 애도하며 그는 폐허가 된 마을에 멈추어 서서 울었다.

소설집 《저주토끼》의 키워드는 ‘복수’다. 그런데 원수를 갚는 사람이 명확하지 않은 경우도 많을뿐더러, 복수를 완수하고서도 누구도 행복해지지 않는다는 것이 또 다른 특이점이기도 하다. 경쟁사를 무너뜨리기 위해 비열한 악성 루머를 냈던 양조 회사 사장도(〈저주토끼〉), ‘대안적인 삶’을 외치며 위선을 떨던 남편도(〈즐거운 나의 집〉), 욕심에 빠져 가족을 비극에 빠뜨린 남자도(〈덫〉) 극단적인 파멸에 이르기는 한다. 일견 통쾌하기도 하지만, 결국 이들에게 내려진 징벌은 그저 자업자득의 결과물일 뿐이며 상처받고 훼손당한 이들의 회복은 담보되지 못한다. 복수를 위한 저주는 되돌아오고, 폭력은 또 다른 값을 치르는 공동의 파국이 열린다.

인용된 정보라 인터뷰에서처럼 복수의 고리를 작용과 반작용, 이로 인한 그다음 차례의 반작용으로 이해한다면 이러한 악순환에서 벗어나는 방법은 무엇일까. 〈흉터〉의 남자는 문제를 해결하려다가 자신이 간절히 지키려던 이를 영영 잃게 되지만 “세상 어딘가에 있을 자신의 삶을 찾기 위해, 그는 해가 뜨는 쪽을 향해 천천히 걷기 시작”(p. 252)한다. 〈바람과 모래의 지배자〉에서 연인에게 배반당했던 공주는 다정한 절대자가 내미는 영생의 프로포즈를 거절하며 담담하게 대답한다. “죽음이 오기 전까지는 살아갈 테니까요”(p. 320)라고.

〈작가의 말〉에서 정보라는 이렇게 말한다. “책 전체를 통해서 전달하려는 특별한 교훈이나 메시지는 없다.《저주토끼》는 환상호러 단편집이고, 환상호러 장르는 대중문학에 속하며, 대중문학은 교훈이나 가르침보다는 즐거움을 위해 존재하는 장르이다.” 하지만 이 책을 여는 우리는 낯설고 으스스한 세계의 재미에 빠져들며, 자신에게 상처 낸 이에게 손톱을 세우는 절박한 마음과 무너진 세계를 딛고 앞으로 나아가려는 굳센 용기를 마주하게 될 것이다.

One of the most talked-about novels in the Korean fiction scene in 2022, the horror/science fiction/fantasy collection "The Curse Rabbit" by novelist IN Jong-ra will be fully revised by Rabbit Hole. Inspired by the "Dumpling Wave Incident," the original version of "The Curse Rabbit" has been restored to its original ending, faithfully reflecting the author's desire to keep the sharp anger alive and the context of people with nowhere to turn. We have also corrected foreign language translations, dialogue and speech patterns between characters, and some confusing or inaccurate nomenclature throughout the book.

Do not make curse items for personal use. Nor should family heirloom items be used for personal curses. It's been a family rule for generations. The rabbit was the one exception.

"That ring, it must be very important?"

The thin voice asks cautiously.

She touches the round, hard, smooth object on the fourth finger of her left hand.

"Yes? But...... isn't the pill to avoid pregnancy?"

She retorted weakly. At her words, the doctor gave her a piercing stare with his jet-black eyes.

"It's your own fault for abusing it and having side effects, medicine isn't something you can just take as you please."

The fox raised its head and spoke to the man as if he were a person.

"Release me."

The man was surprised, but at the same time he saw a glistening liquid oozing from the trapped fox's ankle. The fox was not shedding blood, but something like gold, something that looked like gold. (The Trap)

After being shortlisted for the Booker Prize International last year and securing translation deals in 20 countries around the world, including China, Taiwan, Japan, France, and Spain, novelist INFORA's horror, science fiction, and fantasy novel "The Curse Rabbit" has emerged as one of the most talked-about titles in the Korean fiction scene, and will be released by influential literary brand Rabbit Hole in 2023, the Year of the Rabbit, in a completely revised edition. In order to minimise the duration of the book's unavailability, the revised edition was released quickly, but the entire work was refined through an intensive revision process in addition to the author's preliminary work.

A bizarre fantasy that intrudes on familiarity

The strange consolation of wild and violent emotions

One day, I was just leaving the bathroom after flushing the toilet.

"Mother."

She looked back. A head poked out of the toilet bowl, calling to her.

"Mother."

She stared at the 'head' for a long moment. She flushed the toilet. There was a splash and the 'head' was gone.

Borrowing from a number of folk tales, folktales, fairy tales, and legends, Informa's stories draw the reader in with a creepy but unstoppable intensity, like the scary stories you loved as a child. "Some of the stories are scary enough to keep you awake" (Lee Jongsan). The author invites us to enter a dimensional doorway to an unfamiliar world in the midst of a familiar everyday landscape, and we willingly follow the friendly-faced narrator with a sign that reads, "Welcome to the World of Infalla," down a dark path and into a trap, where hidden twists and turns give us goosebumps, or where we realise the characters' hidden wounds and empathise with their deep sadness.

Above all, Infalla's novels are 'not pretty'. Each of the ten stories in this collection is wild, crazy, and grotesque. They lust, betray, make foolish choices, and show murderous intent towards others, but as we follow their stories, we come to a certain understanding that goes beyond fascination. It is said that "people are scarier than ghosts". But are these stories any more brutal than the world we live in today? These twisted tales offer a strange sense of pleasure and solace as we endure daily surprises and unresolved events.

Death Wish: All Things Must Come to an End

On what's left behind after a bitter revenge

Revenge was not what he wanted. [......] Even with a just ending, he couldn't help but feel a sense of loss. He stopped and wept in the ruins of the village, mourning the old pain and despair of a childhood stolen from him by the witchcraft, fantasies, and misguided beliefs of strangers, a childhood in which every day was a matter of life and death and now meant nothing.

The keyword of the novel is 'revenge', but not only is it often unclear who gets revenge, but another peculiarity is that no one is happy after completing the revenge. A brewery owner who spreads despicable malicious rumours to bring down a competitor (The Curse Rabbit), a husband who shouts about an 'alternative life' and shudders at his hypocrisy (The Pleasant Home), and a man whose greed leads his family to tragedy (The Trap) all reach extreme ruin. The punishments meted out to these men, though poignant at times, are ultimately self-inflicted and do not guarantee recovery for the wounded and damaged. The curse of revenge comes back to haunt, and violence opens up a communal catastrophe with a different price tag.

If the cycle of revenge is understood as an action, a reaction, and a subsequent reaction, as in the quoted interview with Informa, how can we break out of this vicious cycle? The man in Scar tries to solve the problem and loses forever the person he so desperately wanted to protect, but "to find his life somewhere in the world, he begins to walk slowly toward the rising sun" (p. 252). In The Lords of Wind and Sand, the princess, betrayed by her lover, rejects the offer of eternal life made by the loving Absolute with a simple reply. "I will live until death do us part" (p. 320).

In the Author's Note, Infalla says this. "There is no particular lesson or message that I am trying to convey through the book as a whole...The Cursed Rabbit is a fantasy horror short story, and the fantasy horror genre belongs to popular literature, and popular literature is a genre that exists to entertain rather than to teach." But when we open this book, we will find ourselves immersed in the fun of a strange and spooky world, and we will find the desperation of a heart that will sink its nails into those who have hurt it, and the steadfast courage to move forward in a world that has fallen apart.
