아름다운 우리 종이, 한지’ 한글판·영문판 동시 출간!

한국화가 이승철의 20년 한지 연구의 결정판

자연염색·염료·먹 등 우리 고유의 미술 재료를 꾸준히 연구해 온 이승철 교수(동덕여대 미술학과 회화전공 교수, 간송미술관 상임연구원)가 20년 동안 모은 방대한 자료를 바탕으로 아름다운 우리 종이 한지의 글을 집대성하였다. 동양화를 전공한 뒤 한지에 매료되어 ‘한지 박사’ ‘종이 연구가’로 활동하는 지은이의 관심은 우리네 종이 ‘한지’의 우수성을 현대에 되살리는 일이다. 6개월간 한지 공장을 직접 운영하며 전통 한지를 직접 만들어 보기도 하고, 쪽물 들인 감지를 만들기 위해 쪽을 심어 물들이는 공정까지 몸소 실천하였다. 2009년에는 우수한 한지 문화를 여러 사람에 알리기 위해 그동안 모은 한지 유물 8,000여 점을 원주역사박물관에 기증하였다.

그런 실험을 토대로 쓴 『한지: 아름다운 우리 종이』는 2002년에 출간한 『우리가 정말 알아야 할 우리 한지』를 전면 개정한 책이다. 이번에 내용을 보완하여 다듬으면서 새롭게 디자인하였고, 우리 한지 문화의 우수성을 해외에 알리고자 영문판 『Hanji: Everything You Need to Know about Traditional Korean Paper』도 함께 출간하였다.

『한지: 아름다운 우리 종이』는 전통 한지의 태동기인 삼국시대부터 고려, 조선을 거쳐 현대에 이르는 한지의 역사를 체계화하고, 그 제작 방법과 현대적 활용 방안까지 300여 장의 사진과 함께 자세하게 설명하였다. 또 내구성, 통기성, 유연성, 단열성, 습도조절능력 등 한지의 우수성을 물리적, 화학적 실험을 통해 입증해 보였다. 특히 책에는 인간문화재 장용훈 선생님이 직접 만든(화선지, 기계지 제외) 우리 한지 11종(자연염색한 감지·황지·적색지와 외발도침지, 외발지, 쌍발지, 문양지 3가지, 화선지, 기계지) 샘플을 수록하여 독자가 직접 보고 만지면서 한지의 아름다움을 느낄 수 있도록 하였다.

■천년의 세월에도 변하지 않는 우리 종이,

구텐베르크의 금속활자본 성경 종이보다 우수한 한지

세계 최고의 목판 인쇄본 ‘무구정광대다라니경’ 두루마리. 1966년에 발견되어 세상을 놀라게 한 두루마리의 지질은 닥종이였다. 석가탑 사리함 안 비단보에 싸여 있던 ‘무구정광대다라니경’은 1,200여 년의 세월을 탑 속에서 보내고도 좀먹기는커녕 두루마리 일부가 닳아 떨어졌을 뿐 그 형체를 오롯이 보존하고 있었다. 지은이는 그 당시(제작 연대 704～751년) 우리 제지 기술이 중국보다 우수했음을 보여 주는 대표적인 사례로 ‘무구정광대다라니경’을 꼽으면서 한지의 인열 강도(종이를 옆으로 찢었을 때 견디는 힘), 인장 강도(종이를 위아래로 잡아당겼을 때 버티는 힘), 방향성(섬유가 어떻게 얽혀 있는지), 먹의 흡수성과 번짐성, 통기성, 방음성, 단열성 등을 과학적으로 입증해 보였다.

■전통의 맥을 현대적 감각으로 되살린 한지의 활용

한지는 닥나무를 베고 찌고, 삶고, 말리고, 벗기고, 삶고, 두들기고, 고르게 섞고, 뜨는 등 아흔아홉 번 손질을 거친 후 마지막 사람이 한 번 더 만져야 완성된다고 하여 백지(百紙)라고도 불렀다. 책에서는 한지의 주원료와 부원료를 설명한 뒤, 발과 발틀 등 기본 도구들을 손수 만드는 방법에서부터 원료를 풀고, 종이를 뜨고, 압착·건조하는 전통 한지 만드는 과정을 옛모습 그대로 재현하였다.

요즘에는 닥나무 대신 우유팩, 청바지 자투리, 허드레 종이 등 우리가 일상생활에서 구하기 쉬운 섬유 재료를 이용해 일반인도 쉽게 한지를 활용할 수 있다. 간단한 종이 만들기, 재미있는 종이 만들기(꽃잎 종이 만들기, 양파 껍질 종이 만들기, 청바지를 이용한 재생지 만들기, 허드레 종이를 이용한 재생지 만들기) 등 지은이가 수년에 걸쳐 직접 개발한 방법을 소개하였다. 도판과 상세한 설명이 붙어 있어 누구나 기본 도구와 재료만 갖추면 따라할 수 있다.

■생활 공예로서의 한지, 생활 속 다양한 쓰임새

전통 문화 속 한지 공예 이야기를 사진과 함께 설명하였다. 한지를 여러 겹 덧발라 만든 틀에 다양한 색지로 옷을 입힌 다음 여러 가지 무늬를 오려 붙인 색지 공예, 나무로 골격을 짜거나 뼈대를 만들어 안팎으로 종이를 여러 겹 바르는 지장 공예, 종이를 여러 겹 붙여 두껍게 만드는 후지 공예, 종이를 잘게 찢어 물에 불린 뒤 물과 섞어 일정한 틀에 부어 넣거나 덧붙이는 지호 공예, 가위나 조각칼을 사용하여 한지를 오려 붙여 완성한 전지 공예 등 선조들은 다양한 방법으로 생활과 연관된 공예품을 만들었다. 색실첩, 예물함, 서류함, 안경집, 족두리, 반짇고리, 표주박, 종이옷, 조족등, 종이항아리와 그릇류, 삼층장, 지승 바구니와 지승 자리, 지승 팔각반 등 종이로 만든 생활 용품을 소개하였다. 지은이가 원주역사박물관에 기증한 8,000여 점의 한지 유물 중 일부를 볼 수 있다.

'Hanji, Our Beautiful Paper' is now available in both Korean and English!

The definitive edition of Korean artist Lee Seung-cheol's 20-year study of hanji

Professor Lee Seung-cheol (Professor of Painting, Department of Art, Dongdeok Women's University, Permanent Researcher, Kansong Museum of Art), who has been studying Korean art materials such as natural dyes, dyes, and ink, has compiled a beautiful book on Korean paper, hanji, based on vast data collected over 20 years. After studying oriental painting, he became fascinated with hanji and is now a 'hanji doctor' and 'paper researcher', and his interest is to revive the excellence of Korean paper 'hanji' in modern times. For six months, he ran a hanji factory, making traditional hanji himself, and practised the process of planting and dyeing indigo to make indigo ink. In 2009, he donated more than 8,000 hanji artefacts to the Wonju Museum of History in order to share the excellent hanji culture with others.

Based on these experiments, "Hanji: Beautiful Korean Paper" is a completely revised version of "Hanji: What We Really Need to Know" published in 2002. This time, the contents have been supplemented, refined, and redesigned, and an English version, Hanji: Everything You Need to Know about Traditional Korean Paper, has also been published to promote the excellence of Korean hanji culture overseas.

"Hanji: Beautiful Korean Paper systematises the history of traditional Korean paper from the Three Kingdoms period to the modern era through Goryeo and Joseon, and explains in detail how it is made and how it can be used in modern times with more than 300 photographs. In particular, the book includes samples of eleven types of Korean hanji (naturally dyed detect, yellow, and red paper, one-footed dipped paper, one-footed paper, two-footed paper, and three patterned paper) made by human cultural asset Jang Yong-hoon himself (excluding hwasun paper and machine paper) so that readers can feel the beauty of hanji by seeing and touching them.

■Our paper hasn't changed in a thousand years,

Hanji, superior to Gutenberg's metal type Bible paper

The world's oldest woodblock print scroll of the Muguzhengwangdae Darani Sutra. The geology of the scroll, which was discovered in 1966 and shocked the world, is dak paper. Wrapped in a silk cloth in the stupa's sari box, the "Mugunzhengwangdae Dharani Sutra" had spent more than 1,200 years in the stupa, and it had not been eaten, but had retained its shape, with parts of the scroll fraying and falling apart. Jinyi cited the 'Muguzhengwangdae Darani Sutra' as a representative example of how Korean papermaking technology was superior to that of China at that time (704-751), and scientifically demonstrated the tear strength (the force with which the paper can withstand when torn sideways), tensile strength (the force with which the paper can withstand when pulled up and down), orientation (how the fibres are intertwined), ink absorption and smearing, breathability, sound insulation, and heat insulation of Hanji.

■Using Hanji to revive traditional veins in a modern way

Hanji is also called "white paper" because it is said to be finished only when the last person touches it one more time after it has been processed ninety-nine times, including cutting, steaming, boiling, drying, peeling, boiling, beating, mixing evenly, and knitting. After explaining the main and minor ingredients of hanji, the book recreates the traditional hanji making process, from how to make basic tools such as a foot and a foot frame by hand, to unwinding the raw materials, knitting the paper, and pressing and drying it.

Nowadays, instead of using dak wood, people can easily make hanji by using fibre materials that are easy to find in our daily lives, such as milk cartons, jeans scraps, and hemp paper. This book introduces the methods that Ji-Eun has developed over the years, including simple paper making, interesting paper making (flower petal paper, onion peel paper, recycled paper using jeans, and recycled paper using hurdle paper). With diagrams and detailed instructions, anyone with basic tools and materials can follow along.

■Hanji as a living craft and its many uses in everyday life

The story of hanji craft in traditional culture is explained with photos. Ancestors made crafts related to their daily lives in a variety of ways, including sack paper crafts, in which a frame made of several layers of hanji is dressed with various coloured paper and then stamped with various patterns; jijang crafts, in which a skeleton is made of wood, and several layers of paper are applied inside and out; fuji crafts, in which several layers of paper are applied to make it thicker; jiho crafts, in which paper is shredded, soaked in water, mixed with water, and poured or added to a certain frame; and jiji crafts, in which hanji is cut using scissors or a carving knife. She introduced household items made of paper, such as colour notebooks, gift boxes, filing cabinets, eyeglasses, foot rings, ring rings, gourds, paper clothes, jojok lanterns, paper jars and bowls, three-layer cabinets, jiseung baskets, jiseung seats, and jiseung octagonal bands. You can see some of the 8,000 Hanji artefacts donated to the Wonju History Museum by Jinyi.
